I was watching the news last night, and I saw where thr police tazed a member of the city council? What is wrong with this picture? While I don"t believe anyone should be above the law, but we need to make sure thst the police are policed by someone. The news is full of reports are full of incidents where the police have used excessive force, killing, tazing, and exercising liberties that even the Sheriff of Nottingham would not dream of. I saw that the Olive Garden refused service to a Cop who was wearing his gun, they have a strict no guns policy. If a regular citizen can'T CARRY A GUN IN THERE, THEN WHY SHOULD A COP? i WILL RANT MORE LATER. dAVID qUALLS

No, His Holiness is not trailed by a stylist and personal trainer, although there is a papal physician and a few attendants in charge of wardrobe. When you’re traveling as both a head of state and the leader of a 2 billion-member church, you need some helpers. The traveling papal entourage is a modern creation. No pope stayed overnight in the United States until John Paul II, in 1979. With six weeks’ notice, the Vatican requested 400 hotel rooms in Boston, but the whole city was booked. (A local hotelier reportedly advised them to try Providence, R.I.) Over time the entourage has shrunk, as Francis purged stowaway cardinals and other hangers-on, but the local, on-the-ground operations have gotten bigger and bigger, especially in the District. Here are the seven types of members of the papal entourage that’s boomeranging along the Eastern Seaboard this week: 1. Members of the papal household, including Sandro Mariotti, alternately called the pope’s valet, butler or assistant. This is the guy who makes sure the pope’s hands are always free. When someone gives something to Francis, Francis gives it to Mariotti, who’s also on umbrella duty and is in charge of making sure the papal suitcase is packed and unpacked. Also in this group: Vatican secretaries, the physician and papal household prefect “Gorgeous George,” a.k.a. Archbishop Georg Gänswein, whose Old Testament good looks landed him on the cover of Italian Vanity Fair a couple of years ago. [Pope Francis has arrived in the United States. Here’s what to expect.] 2. The masters of ceremonies. Led by Monsignor Guido Marini, this team coordinates the pope’s liturgical events: Masses, vespers, anything requiring props and public prayer. John Paul II liked colorful celebrations, while Benedict XVI preferred a sedate liturgy. Marini’s job is to thread papal preferences into the pageantry. “The Masses around the world with John Paul II were considered very colorful, and Benedict preferred a more sedate, liturgical style — Marini was able to accommodate that,” says Matthew Bunson, author of “The Pope Encyclopedia.” “Pope Francis has retained Guido Marini, and he has adjusted to Francis’s particular tastes” — simple and straightforward. The Roman Curia. Heads of various departments in the Vatican administration will be along for the ride, such as the secretariat of state and administrators who serve as liaisons with jurisdictions on the pope’s itinerary. “He’ll be speaking with the U.N., so people at Secretariat of State’s office that deal with the U.N. will be there,” says the Very Rev. Mark Morozowich, who worked in the Vatican press office under John Paul II and is now interim provost of Catholic University. “He’ll be speaking with Congress, so people on the government relations desk will most likely be here.” 4. The security team, which is a combination of Vatican City police officers and the Pontifical Swiss Guard — which has defended the pope since 1506 — plus local counterparts (the Secret Service in this case). This visit’s security operation is one of the largest in U.S. history; the federal budget allots $4.5 million a year to handle “national special security events” like this one. Trivia: In 1979, the overtime wages alone for local law enforcement covering John Paul II’s 34-hour visit to the District cost nearly $1 million. “A colleague of mine went with [John Paul II] to Africa and talked about how at the end of the trip, the reporters were absolutely thrashed and he was pumped,” says Greg Erlandson, publisher of Our Sunday Visitor, a Catholic publishing company. John Paul II “was a classic extrovert. He liked getting out of the Vatican and drawing energy from the people.” Francis is also a people person, so the tension in his entourage is always one of proximity and availability vs. safety and security. 5. The communications team. La Sala Stampa, or the Holy See Press Office, is led by the pope’s spokesman, the Rev. Federico Lombardi, and includes Vatican radio and TV services and the Vatican newspaper l’Osservatore Romano. There are several people who tweet for @Pontifex, but most remain in Rome. The press corps is kept at the back of the pope’s private plane, sometimes referred to as “Shepherd One” outside the pope’s entourage (whose members simply call it “the papal plane”). Francis & Co. flew on a commercial Alitalia jet to Havana and will fly an American Airlines jet out of Philadelphia. John Paul II and Benedict XVI enjoyed a customized first-class experience — with the front of the plane transformed by the carrier into a hotel-like room, complete with bed and desk — but Francis has insisted that he sit in a regular row in standard first class. “When we were flying around Latin America in July, he was sitting in the front row,” says Cindy Wooden, who is the Rome bureau chief for Catholic News Service and has flown on the papal plane over two dozen times. “If you look down the aisle you can see his elbow covered in white, or his zucchetto” — the yarmulke-like cap atop his head. Before each flight, if possible, Francis walks the aisle and greets everyone. 7. One lucky Vatican staffer. Each time he travels out of Italy, Francis plucks one layman or laywoman from the Vatican to join his entourage. I was just making a "funny" with the check." - Doug Herrmann, Painesville, Oh., father The Common Core standards, first proposed a decade ago by a coalition of governors and school superintendents, are math and English benchmarks describing what students should know after completing each grade. Supporters insist that the standards are needed to ensure some uniformity across the nation, but critics say testing for national standards indirectly dictates curriculum, which they say undermines local control of education. More than 40 states initially signed on to Common Core, but several have repealed participation amid pressure from parents. Herrmann was not the first parent to be flummoxed by math techniques that bear little resemblance to old school arithmetic. One test question that garnered parental scorn asked, "Tell how to make 10 when adding 8+5." The student wrote, “You cannot make 10 with 8 + 5,” to which the teacher apparently replied in blue ink, “Yes you can. Take 2 from 5 and add it to 8 (8+2=10) Then add 3.” Glyn Wright, executive director of Eagle Forum, told FoxNews.com last year before school began that math was one of Common Core's weakest points. “The math standard focuses on investigative math, which has been shown to be a disaster,” Wright said. “With the new math standard in the Common Core, there are no longer absolute truths. So 3 times 4 can now equal 11 so long as a student can effectively explain how they reached that answer.” Stanford Prof. James Milgram, the only mathematician on the Common Core Validation Committee, refused to sign off on the math standards, calling the whole thing “in large measure a political document” during testimony he gave in May 2011 in which he advocated for Texas not to adopt the Common Core standards. “I had considerable influence on the mathematics standards in the document. However, as is often the case, there was input from many other sources -- including State Departments of Education -- that had to be incorporated into the standards,” he said during the testimony. Earlier this month, a federal judge rejected GOP presidential candidate and Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal’s push to block federal officials from penalizing Louisiana if the state quits Common Core. Opponents, including Jindal, said the standards are developmentally inappropriate and part of federal efforts to nationalize education. The Louisiana governor once supported the standards, but changed his position as Common Core became more unpopular in the GOP. The Obama administration embraced the standards and encouraged states to use them. Last school year, Common Core-aligned standardized tests marched forward, going from paper-and-pencil to the computer to allow for questions to adapt in difficulty based on a student's answer. A new baseline of testing data was expected as a result. However, many states had technical issues with the electronic form that left them unable to complete the testing. The unanimous order by the Pennsylvania Supreme Court's five justices also could prompt a legal challenge from the first-term Democrat, who is also the first woman to hold the position of Pennsylvania's top prosecutor. In the meantime, it creates an issue of leaving the state's top law enforcement official in charge of a 750-employee office and a $93 million budget but without the ability to act as a lawyer. ADVERTISEMENT In the order, the court said its action should not be construed as removing her from office. Kane's office said it was reviewing the decision and had no immediate comment. Her private lawyers made no immediate statement. The order comes barely a month after Montgomery County authorities arrested Kane on charges she leaked secret investigative information to a newspaper reporter and then lied about it under oath. She was charged with perjury, obstruction and other counts. Her lawyers have argued that suspending her license while she is contesting the allegations would circumvent explicit constitutional provisions for removing her from office and violate her right to due process of law. Kane has maintained she did nothing wrong. In the Senate, the potential for the court's action has prompted Senate lawyers to research a never-used constitutional provision that allows a two-thirds vote of senators to remove certain elected officials. In its Aug. 25 petition to the high court justices, the agency that investigates misconduct by Pennsylvania lawyers argued that Kane and one of her former defense attorneys admitted that she had authorized the release of information related to a 2009 grand jury investigation. That allegation is also central to the criminal case against her. However, Kane's current lawyers say she did not disclose grand jury material or information kept secret under state criminal records laws. Instead, they have argued, she only authorized the release of information "relating to a pattern of unjustifiable selective prosecution or nonprosecution" under her predecessors. Previous statements by her attorneys that she authorized the transcript's release were incorrect, her lawyers now contend. Following the filing of charges Aug. 6, Gov. Tom Wolf, a fellow Democrat, called on Kane to resign. Kane, whose term is up in 2017, has refused.

The scope of the investigation into the debt-laden 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) was not clear, said the newspaper, which cited "a person familiar with the matter". Neither the FBI nor 1MDB responded to a request for comment. The reported FBI investigation comes shortly after a former member of Malaysia's ruling party was arrested just before travelling to the United States where he planned to make a police complaint and urge U.S. authorities to look into the allegations of money-laundering at 1MDB. 1MDB's advisory board is chaired by Prime Minister Najib Razak. The fund has been dogged by controversy over its $11 billion debt and alleged financial mismanagement. A series of international investigations are underway as the scandal surrounding the fund widens. Swiss authorities said this month they had frozen funds in Swiss banks amid investigations into 1MDB. Hong Kong authorities also said they were investigating a complaint related to the firm. The WSJ had reported in July that investigators looking into 1MDB had found that nearly $700 million was transferred into the personal bank account of Najib. The prime minister has denied taking money from 1MDB or anywhere else for personal gain. Malaysia's anti-graft agency declared the funds a donation. Najib has faced unprecedented criticism from within his ruling party, in particular form veteran former Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad, who has called on Najib to step down. Speaking after talks in London, he said what he described as Russia's new focus on fighting Islamic State militants could be an opportunity to push towards a political settlement. He said this was all the more urgent as violence in Syria was the "root cause" of Europe's current migrant crisis. The EU, which is divided on the issue, is to hold emergency talks next week. Mr Kerry is on a European tour which is expected to be dominated by the Syrian conflict. After talks with his UK counterpart Philip Hammond on Saturday, he said they "agreed completely on the urgency of nations coming together in order to resolve this war that has gone on for much too long". Analysis - Sebastian Usher, BBC Middle East analyst It's been a long time since there's been serious talk of working towards a diplomatic solution to the Syrian conflict. The refugee crisis and the rise of IS have provided the spur. Just as importantly, perhaps, a series of defeats for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has made his position look more precarious than it has for years, possibly enough to shift the stalemate and bring the Syrian government to genuine negotiations. For now at least, it seems to have prompted Russia to start bolstering its military support for Mr Assad in ways that have worried the US. The question for the West is whether Russia wants to help the Syrian government fight IS or simply keep Mr Assad in power. Either way, it's making the Syrian equation even more complicated. He added that the migrant crisis had to "be addressed by dealing with the root cause" - which he said was violence in Syria. For more than four years the government of President Assad has been fighting various rebels groups - including IS, which controls vast swathes of territory in both Syria and neighbouring Iraq. Mr Kerry said there was a need to "use this moment when Russia appears more committed to doing more" against IS, to move towards a diplomatic solution. "We're prepared to negotiate. Is Assad prepared to negotiate, really negotiate? Is Russia prepared to bring him to the table?" There is a process by which all the parties have to come together to reach an understanding of how this can best be achieved." Mr Hammond said the Syrian president could not be part of Syria's long-term future "but the modality and timing has to be part of a political solution". More than 200,000 Syrians have been killed since the conflict began in 2011. More than four million have fled abroad and many more are internally displaced.
